I tried all versions with no avail. But, when I changed to a smaller graphics card it worked fine for some reason. I ran it on 2 identical Pc's, and the one with the E-Geforce 6800 OC ran it at full speed with 1 or 2 bojects running, but with more than that, 1 frame per second on all Direct X versions. I have Direct X 9.0 C. Geforce 4 4200 ran it fine with 20 or 30 objects colliding at once. These are on P4 3.0 GH computers. The only difference between teh computers is that one has a different sound card.

that's really strange. I suppose it's possible it's a sound issue, because it obviously plays sounds whenever 2 props hit each other... but still that seems a bit extreme.. especially considering it's such a nice gfx card.

Is there a way to disable sounds in it so I can check and see if that is the problem.

Maybe its the fact that its onboard sound, though I can play any game with no problem with plenty of sounds, it could be a compatability issue with the sound card. I'll try to mess around.

Okay, I found the problem (I think) I turned on V sync and turned on the highest resolution, put anti alaising to level 4 and floating point to consistent, now I run with 15-20 with only minor slow downs around 22 and major slow downs around 40. What does V-sync do exactly?

Vsync means that the rendering system will wait for the monitor to finish drawing the current frame before rendering the next one. this effectively limits the framerate to your monitor's refresh rate (usually 60/70/100Hz), but eliminates ugly "tearing" that happens when the card starts drawing a new frame when the monitor is only halfway done updating.

not sure why that would affect anything, but hey, if it works :P

also, are you running fullscreen or in a window?

although it might actually be the floating point setting... not sure though, I personally run the game on my laptop (ATI RADEON MOBILE 9700)

Full Screen, I'll try changing all the settings around. I just wondered what V-sync was. Either way this is by far the coolest demo with a car I've played on Newton ever. I still can't run to much while driving the car, but it is better than before.

yeah, I found that one the other day, it's already fixed in the next (upcoming) beta :)

I've changed the game a bit, allowing you to rotate props in all 3 directions before placing them. this gives an amazing amount of freedom to the arenas you can create. I was stacking plywood like a house made from a deck of cards :P

here's a simple example using my concrete bump prop:

it's actually pretty strong too, I put a piece of plywood on it and drove a 1000kg car over it :)

Wow we are checking this project very closely, we can’t wait unlit you are okay with a version you are happy with, so we can show it in our download page.
I don’t even know what to say, your talent is extraordinary Walaber and this has nothing to do with Newton, I am truly amazed at your abilities.
I tip my hat to you any time.

It looks like 'the Arch' in St. Louis!

... i'll be pleased if you programm a 'freeze mode' that the objects don't move while you are in the freeze mode! But the demo is enourmus good! I love it and i'm angry just to know programming with gamestudio! I realy have to learn Ogre!

If u have HL2 u should try that garys mod thingy for ideas. I personaly havn't tryed it but looking on mags its pritty impressive.

For ppl who don't know what the mod is:

Its basicaly a physics playground which u can spawn objects, weld items together, etc.

thanks for the nice comments everyone! the game is progressing really well, I feel like it's almost ready for a proper release. It's just a matter of cleanup now, adding a few new props, and cleaning up the textures/models of the existing ones. I also need to tweak the car physics a bit more until I'm happy with the way they drive, and add a few missing sound effects.

all simple things, but they take time :( I hope to have the game ready by the end of the month!! (personal goal, who knows if I'll meet it)

[edit]
can't do much on the game right now, so I spent a few minutes recording a little video of the current build :)

things you can see in this video:
* new 3-degree prop placement system (transparent ring shows current rotational direction).
* repeat last prop feature for quick arena building
* realtime reflections on the cars
* improved GUI colors / font

New Functionality Video - divx5 encoded .avi file, approx 6MB
