Newton for OpenPandora

Postby Carli » Sat Nov 28, 2009 12:37 pm

Hi,

I found an opensource project called OpenPandora.
http://openpandora.org/

They try to make a handheld with a full linux OS espeacially for games.
The Architecture ist linux/ARM.

Maybe you could port newton for ARM/linux? It would be cool to have some good libraries for developing games. Some Producers of Computer Games also were intended to port their games to OpenPandora. --> The advantage is when you develop something for a PC (linux), it will also run on a OpenPandora.

It's a handheld with an ARM processor running on linux.

The project is raised by a community that wants to spread linux.

The PandoraBox can rune OpenSource Games like Doom or Quake 1-3 but is also able to emulate GameBoy etc. in RealTime.

They hope, they can deliver the first handhelds before christmas.

I beleive that the Linux Make file could be adapted eassily to build for the Platform.
But I do not thong it is as simple as compiling a library I am sure it must have some source of SDK, how do we get SDK?

when I go to the website all I see is a dead page this. And there is not more info anywhere else other that very vage references to that same Page.
Due to the large number of visitors caused by our press release, our site is currently not available. Sorry for the inconvenience. We will be back soon.

Normally a project like that cost tens of millions of dollars, maybe in the hundreds of million if not even more, so if it was real then you will read about the companies or the companies behind it.
to me this looks like a Hoax someone made.

I clicked on the link again and I was able to get it. They have some information and even a video when a man assembly a prototype. I looks very, very small.
Wow If this is true it will be heaven small developers, If what I saw is true they could put a dent on IPhone, Ninetendo , and Play station portable.
Netwon already compile on ARM cpus, and I have a ready to run Linux project so when the time comes, we are ready, if we are allowed to participate.
They have a link to a develeoper site but there is not really too much info there, maybe it is too earlly.

I have to say that as much as I want it to be true, It does not inspire me much confidence.
They say they are making 4000 units, and the price will be $330.00 each, wich is only 1.3 millions.
I do not think that cover the cost of making such system.
To me this sound like the Tech version for the Nigerian Price emails that now is making a great piece of Hardware but only need from you to order a model in advance.
I beleive it when I see it, until them It sounds to eassy and too good to be true.

yea, thx.

I think it should be no problem using a proprietary library for games as long as they are not compiled into the kernel ;)

While the pandora is a nice project, i would be more interested in android. A pandora newton port would probably also be useable with google android (same architectures, both run linux) - and that could be really awesome for newton. It is likely the only physics engine which scales without sacrificing anything from desktop and supercomputers to phones, and having it availible for more mobile platforms would make it much much easier to port games to them all. :)

If Newton would be OpenSource, it could be included into the linux packaging system, that means available for every platform that runs linux and downloadable with synaptic. (1. means for openpandora and android without ever having run on this system, 2. means no copying files to /usr/lib anymore)

OpenSource + Newton = Bad. Been discussed before, never going to happen. Good its not. Stu can't be bothered repeating past discussions.

P.S The whole copying stuff to the correct folders manually instead of having a nice installation application (Which you get with most Windows apps. Note that i have even made my own personal installation system, so i don't see why its so hard for linux people to make one) is rearly outdated. Someone should just make an installer and bring Linux into the 21st Century, that solves having to place things in different folders yourself.

i also made a linux installing system, but a .deb package would be much better.

The topic becomes hot now.

The OpenPandora is out and I'm beginning to think about a Linux/ARM port of my game.
Would be a great chance to be the first and only physics library for this platform ;)

So, when do you think will you release a libNewton.so (+JointLib) for Linux/ARM?

I hope they get well into mass production so that openpandora will become the new hand held standard.
