Swinging/Moving platforms

I'm trying to create platforms that have a straight path which they will follow up/down or left/right.
How would I move such an object? The problem is: What if other objects block the movement? Has anyone ever done that, yet?

I'm asking because of my game "CogWork", which should be something like "Little Big Planet".

Simple solution is to use static (mass=0) bodies and then setting position and velocity directly.

Harder solution is to use joints and then using spring and/or pid controller to control the movement.
