WiiSticks [wii remote + physics]

Postby walaber » Sun Dec 31, 2006 2:38 am

I have been playing around with the Wii remote lately, and this is my first prototype combining Wii remote input + physics! It's a virtual version of a toy, where you flick a stick back and forth between other sticks. Screenshots and video below!

I like the effect motion.
Nice work.

Oh now I got it, you plugged two controllers, and you are trying to control the free stick. Wow That's quite remarkable :D

BTW the link to the youtube video does not seem to be working
Better check that one out because I got the feeling lot of people will be impressed by that one, because I do not think that people still get the idea that the Wii control is that accurate. Must people think it is a gizmo that sort of work, but in reality it is quite an ingenious piece of engineering

Hey walaber the trampoline had become sort of a classic for the you tube home video enthusiast :D :D
I see the there are about a dozen now.
I can see how the copycat will come on with "original trampoline ideas"

Maybe if you are planning a next update, it should have the wii remote option.

I'm not sure why the youtube link isn't live yet... sometimes it takes a while.

I will try uploading it again.

That is very cool.

Seemed to be a slight lag though from moving to in-game movement. Is that due to the drivers/program, or the Wiimote?

Whoa! Walaber, you seem to be light years ahead of everyone else! That is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Good job, man! You are an inspiration to me, to say the least. :P

thanks! regarding the lag... i think most of it is because (1) the physics take a few frames to "catch up" with the input, and (2) I am only properly reading the orientation of the remote when it is held fairly still, so quick jerks take a second to register. I need to learn how to interpret the values coming from the accelerometer better, and I should be able to reduce the lag on quick movements significantly.

I will improve the demo a bit, and then prepare a binary for people to try out. The release version will also have the option to use 1 wiimote + nunchuck attachment for those with only 1 remote.

almost ready to release a demo. I will do a bit more testing and tweaking first though.... in the meantime here are some screenshots of the new version :)

new features
* allows using 1 remote + nunchuck OR 2 remotes, either.
* several different "sticks" to fling around... some rigid, some "floppy".
* adjustable gravity
* improved graphics :)
* entire program controlled by the wii remote

Walaber, I want your brain. Coolest Wii demo on the block. No wonder Wii remotes are sold out all over the place.

for anyone that is interested in getting a bluetooth adaptor for your PC, check this out:

http://www.acortech.com/Generic_ES-388_Class_1_USB_V2.0/ES-388/partinfo-id-3219645.html

US$8.00 with free shipping!!! I ordered mine on a Sunday, and it arrived on Thursday. Works perfectly with the Wii remote.
